3PAR Thin Reclamation for Veritas Storage Foundation by Symantec
The Challenge Thin technologies from 3PAR® provide significant savings on capital and operating expenses that lower storage TCO. What if these thin technologies could be further extended to file systems and host operating systems to create additional savings?
To achieve this, host operating systems, file systems, and storage servers would need a standard mechanism to intelligently communicate disk space utilization—something that has traditionally been lacking. A plethora of different file systems with different file formats and different methods for allocating and using storage has further complicated this problem.
3PAR has taken a pioneering approach to solving this dilemma by working with file system and operating system vendors to further extend thin technologies across the datacenter. As part of this program, 3PAR and Symantec have jointly defined a Thin Reclamation API that enables a host file system to intelligently communicate with a 3PAR InServ® Storage Server in order to identify storage blocks associated with deleted files and notify the InServ that these blocks should be freed for use with 3PAR’s space reclamation capabilities. This development marks the industry’s first automated use of file system-level intelligence to continually optimize storage utilization and enhance infrastructure automation.
3PAR Thin Reclamation for Veritas Storage Foundation keeps storage volumes thin over time by allowing granular, automated, non-disruptive space reclamation within the InServ array. This is accomplished by communicating deleted block information to the InServ using the Thin Reclamation API. Upon receiving this information, the InServ autonomically frees this allocated but unused storage space. The thin reclamation capabilities provide environments using Veritas Storage Foundation by Symantec an easy way to keep their thin volumes thin over time, especially in situations where a large number of writes and deletes occur.
