The ChallengeWhile internal tiering within a storage array is sometimes the most cost-effective approach to supporting diverse application requirements, it isn't always. Unfortunately, traditional arrays force users to align applications with specific storage tiers on a one-to-one basis, which means "unused" performance or capacity from one tier cannot be shared with another. In many cases, more expensive Fibre Channel drives are purchased for performance-sensitive applications, even though performance potential remains untapped elsewhere, driving up costs unnecessarily.

The Solution3PAR^® Nearline for Online is an innovative approach to cost-optimized storage that enables you to deploy only Nearline storage—high-capacity, low-cost, enterprise SATA capacity—for all your applications. With 3PAR Nearline for Online, you can meet service level requirements for both "online" and "nearline" applications with a single, consolidated, massively scalable system that uses cost-effective SATA technology exclusively.

3PAR Nearline for Online is enabled by the following distinct technology advantages of 3PAR Utility Storage:

• Purpose-built virtualized storage platform: 3PAR Utility Storage is designed to deliver high and predictable performance levels through the wide striping of data across numerous Nearline drives. Unlike traditional arrays, 3PAR InServ^® Storage Servers can pool the capacity and performance of all system drives and apply that pool against aggregated application demands.

• Nearline drive technology in a massively scalable, tiered-storage array: 3PAR's support for economical enterprise SATA drives lowers costs while ensuring resiliency.

• Rapid RAID rebuild: The InServ leverages its massively parallel and highly virtualized design to rapidly and intelligently rebuild RAID 1 and 5 protection in the event of a drive failure. 3PAR RAID MP (Fast RAID 6) is also available for added resiliency.

3PAR's support for Nearline capacity builds upon a virtualized platform that simultaneously supports a broad range of drive tiers with varying price/performance characteristics. As always, 3PAR customers can still configure both Fibre Channel and Nearline drive capacity within the same InServ. And with 3PAR Dynamic Optimization, customers can non-disruptively convert data service levels as needed across Nearline and Fibre Channel storage tiers with a single command. For many environments, an internally tiered configuration may be the most cost-optimal approach.
