Autonomic Storage Tiering

Autonomic Storage Tiering: Meet Service Level Targets for 30% LessAutonomic storage tiering reduces costs while delivering the performance and agility to meet changing and unpredictable workloads in virtualized environments.

Looking to grow your business but not your budget? With autonomic storage tiering on 3PAR InServ® Storage Servers, you can increase service levels but not costs. 3PAR's autonomic approach to service level optimization pairs data with the most cost-effective resource capable of meeting its service level requirements at any given time.

Reduce Costs. Gain Agility. Minimize Risk.

Autonomic storage tiering tools from 3PAR® give enterprise and cloud datacenters the ability to react quickly to changing application and infrastructure requirements for the lowest cost and with total confidence. Achieve service level targets at the lowest possible cost—even in the largest and most demanding environments—while increasing infrastructure agility and minimizing the risks typically associated with moving data between storage tiers.

Traditional approaches to service level optimization rely on static, application-level tiering. Key limitations include: complexity; inability to move data without downtime or service level impacts; and time-consuming planning, configuration, and migration.

Full-Volume Tiering with 3PAR Dynamic Optimization
FULL-VOLUME TIERING

Dynamic Optimization: Tiering Data at the Volume Level Since 2005, 3PAR Dynamic Optimization software has been widely deployed by 3PAR customers for non-disruptive, autonomic workload rebalancing across 3PAR InServ Storage Servers. With Dynamic Optimization, application volumes are non-disruptively distributed and redistributed across tiers to align application requirements with data QoS levels on demand.

Adaptive Optimization: Tiering Data at the
Sub-Volume Level
Now 3PAR Adaptive Optimization delivers the next major advance in autonomic storage tiering by taking a fine-grained, highly automated, policy-driven approach to service level optimization for enterprise and cloud datacenters.

Building on top of the massively parallel, widely striped, and highly granular 3PAR InSpire® Architecture, Adaptive Optimization leverages the proven, fine-grained data movement engine built into the 3PAR InForm® Operating System—the same sub-volume data movement leveraged by Dynamic Optimization—and applies it to independent regions within a volume. The result is highly reliable, non-disruptive autonomic tiered storage that delivers the right QoS to the right data at the right time—at all times—to deliver storage that meets service level targets for the lowest possible cost.

Sub-Volume Tiering with 3PAR Adaptive Optimization
SUB-VOLUME TIERING

Meet Service Level Targets for 30% Less Sub-volume level tiering combined with unique architectural benefits of the InServ array allow enterprise and cloud datacenters to meet even the most demanding service level targets for up to 30% less. With Adaptive Optimization software, the InServ is able to deliver high performance levels using an extremely lean Solid State Drive (SSD) tier. At any given time, only the most performance-intensive data is placed onto SSDs, meaning that service level targets can be met with a minimal number of these premium drives. Meanwhile, the ability to stripe writes widely across all array resources, combined with abundantly scalable levels of performance, enable the InServ to use highly cost-efficient Nearline (enterprise SATA) drives to meet broader capacity requirements. The combination of Adaptive Optimization software, SSDs, and widely striped SATA drives delivers a savings of up to 30% as compared to using Fibre Channel drives alone. Learn more »
