Autonomic Management

Storage management for clustered and virtual server environments will never be the same. 3PAR Autonomic Groups is new InForm® Operating System software that allows you to create host, volume, and even domain groups that automate and expedite storage provisioning, monitoring, and data protection. Now three clicks and 60 seconds are all that is needed to fully create and provision multiple volumes to multiple servers—the same process that can consume hours and even days with legacy storage.

With the introduction of Autonomic Groups, 3PAR extends its autonomic provisioning and load balancing paradigm to clustered and virtual server environments, effectively eliminating the storage management overhead associated with server clusters of all kinds: virtual servers, database servers, and high availability server clusters. Stop Managing Your Storage It’s storage you don’t have to think about. Autonomic storage isn’t something new to 3PAR. For almost a decade, 3PAR has been a leader in making storage solutions simple and efficient by building in autonomic policy management features that deliver increased reliability and reduce storage administration time by up to 90%. With 3PAR, storage management isn’t just automatic, but intelligent, taking place at a sub-system level and without administrator intervention, so it just works. The result is storage that is uniquely self-configuring, self-optimizing, self-monitoring, and self-healing. It’s storage that just works, so you can focus on your business, not your storage.

Self-Configuring StorageWith 3PAR InServ® Storage Servers, volume configuration and provisioning are handled automatically and intelligently, without pre-planning—requiring only two steps and about 15 seconds. Legacy monolithic platforms require hours, if not days, of pre-planning and provisioning. In fact, this process is often so complex that it requires costly professional services to complete.

The automation technology within the InForm® Operating System, together with the InSpire® Architecture, delivers instant, application-tailored provisioning through the autonomic, fine-grained virtualization of lower-level components. The system constructs volumes intelligently, based on available resources, with the InForm OS creating optimally configured, load-balanced volumes in seconds, based on available system resources. Bundled with the InForm OS, products such as 3PAR Rapid Provisioning, 3PAR Scheduler, and 3PAR Autonomic Groups, along with standalone InForm software products such as 3PAR Thin Provisioning, allow users to “set it and forget it” when it comes to their storage.

Self-Optimizing Storage With the InServ platform, massively parallel and fine-grained striping of data across internal resources assures high and predictable service levels for all workload types. Service conditions remain high and predictable as the use of the system grows or in the event of a component failure while traditional storage planning, change management, and array-specific professional services are eliminated. Features such as 3PAR Dynamic Optimization and 3PAR System Tuner ensure optimal service levels over time—even as your system grows and you bring new applications online, without you even having to think about it. And 3PAR’s unique thin technologies enable you to maximize storage ROI on an ongoing basis by giving your storage not only the ability to start thin, but to get thin and stay thin.

Self-Monitoring Storage 3PAR InServ arrays are designed to be self-monitoring so that you never have to worry about the health of your storage. Many of 3PAR’s InForm software products feature user-customizable alert thresholds that internally monitor key system health statistics such as capacity utilization and performance levels and trigger automated analysis and notification processes. Running as an agent on the server, 3PAR Host Explorer autonomically and securely communicates host information such as Fibre Channel World Wide Name (WWN) and host multipath data to the InServ to reduce manual administration. Also running on the host, 3PAR System Reporter is a historical performance and capacity management tool that delivers customizable, granular statistics for a variety of physical and logical elements within one more more InServ arrays to simplify reporting, monitoring, and troubleshooting.

3PAR Services and Support augments these built-in software features by eliminating the need for on-site diagnostics. Intelligent automation, analysis, and notification works remotely with the built-in self-monitoring features of the InServ. To support the InServ platform’s built-in hardware and software self-monitoring features, 3PAR Central provides a centralized support infrastructure that enables 3PAR to take full ownership of the support process to ensure rapid problem resolution and an excellent customer experience, every time.

Self-Healing Storage

The InSpire Architecture and InForm OS are also designed to provide superior error detection, isolation, and correction to deliver resilience that simply cannot be matched by traditional arrays. Even under failure conditions, the InSpire Architecture sustains high levels of performance through advanced error isolation and massive parallelism. InServ arrays are also able to maintain application workloads more consistently since they were designed to eliminate acute component-level dependencies.

Software products including 3PAR Persistent Cache and RAID MP (Multi-Parity) help preserve service levels in the event of a component outage and protect against multiple disk failures.
