Lean Times Call for Thin Storage
2008 taught us a powerful lesson: lean times call for thin storage. In Wave 11 of TheInfoPro’s Storage Study, 87% of IT professionals acknowledged the importance of thin provisioning as a virtualization technology. In fact, a number of vendors recently announced ”thin” solutions—some “thinner” than others. But while the industry has been playing catch-up, 3PAR has been staying busy.

In 2002, 3PAR introduced 3PAR Thin Provisioning software, which has today become the industry standard for starting thin. In September 2008, 3PAR announced the introduction of the world’s first thin storage processor, the 3PAR® Gen3 ASIC, in our new 3PAR InServ® T-Class Storage Servers. These third-generation utility storage arrays are the first in the industry to incorporate a "fat-to-thin" volume conversion mechanism right into silicon to ensure high rates of capacity utilization while maintaining industry-leading performance levels. “Thin Provisioning 2.0” is here and with it has come all new possibilities for getting thin.

But starting thin and getting thin are still only part of the story. Last year 3PAR and Symantec also announced collaboration on the development of Thin Reclamation capability, another industry first. This “Thin Provisioning 3.0” technology uses filesystem-level intelligence to continually optimize storage utilization and deliver infrastructure automation. With Thin Reclamation, not only is it possible to start thin and get thin, but to stay thin.

Looking ahead to the New Year, it’s clear that the dual pressures bearing down on service providers, government agencies, and enterprises alike to innovate while also reducing costs continue to create a demand for smart, strategic storage.
